What’s new with WordPress 3.4 update

Last week the WordPress 3.4 update was released, we’d already been made aware of the features we could hope to see with this but now we’ve actually been able to see them and see what they can do. This is a little overview of the new features and why they could help people new to wordpress and more serious developers alike. So here we go….

Live Theme Customiser and Preview

The new live theme customiser is the most noticeable change in WordPress 3.4, it lets admins change a variety of settings of a theme (as long as the theme is compatible with the theme customiser). You can use this by going to the appearance section of the admin area, then select the theme you wish to edit. Now you will have a live preview of the theme to the right and settings that can be altered on the left. The amount of options available will depend on the them but the default themes allow you to change site name and tagline, colours, layout style, header image, background image and homepage settings. It looks a little something like this;

Twitter, Auto Embed tweets

previously you would need to install a plugin to embed tweets in posts. Those days are over, now its just like adding youtube videos and you only need to add the link to your tweet on a separate line in your post. WordPress 3.4 will then auto embed the tweet with all the normal features like reply, retweet, follow and favorite. Making life a lot easier!

Custom Header and Background Improvements

Since WordPress introduced the add_theme_support function it became obvious that they were aiming to standardise theme features to allow the customisation of the general features that appear in most themes. With WordPress 3.4 they have included custom header and custom background to the add_theme_support function arguments so that users can make these changes easily from the admin area. Find out more about how to utilise these features from the WordPress codex.

Image Captions can include html

In previous versions of wordpress you could only add text into image captions, but thats all changed in the new update. You can now add links into image captions making it great for acknowledging photo authors.

More improved features

There are many other smaller additions and tweeks included in the new WordPress 3.4 update and you can see them all here
